Is Aquascaping Expensive? Here’s the Real Breakdown (From My Experience Running a Design Studio)

This is one of the most common questions I get:

“Is aquascaping expensive?”

And my honest answer is always the same:

👉 It depends on the tank size, the equipment you choose, and how serious you want to get.

Aquascaping can be expensive if you go full premium —
but it can also be very reasonable if you choose wisely and avoid unnecessary upgrades.

After helping hundreds of beginners and maintaining customer tanks every week, here’s my real, transparent breakdown of what things actually cost in Malaysia.

No sugar-coating. No hype. Just real numbers.

Why People Think Aquascaping Is Expensive

Because they usually:

    • buy the wrong things
    • buy unnecessary things
    • buy twice or more
    • upgrade later
    • listen to “cheap enough lah” advice
    • rush into fancy plants without proper setup

The truth:
A properly planned tank can be very cost-effective long-term.

A poorly planned tank becomes expensive VERY fast.

What Actually Determines the Cost

 1. Tank Size

This is the biggest factor.

  • 45cm → cheap to start, harder to maintain
  • 60cm → best balance of cost + success
  • 90cm → more premium, better visual impact

Larger tanks cost more upfront, but paradoxically, they are easier and more stable.

 2. Equipment Quality

Not necessarily expensive — just suitable.

A good filter and light will save you money on:

  • algae treatment
  • dying plants
  • restarting tanks
  • replacing cheap equipment

I’ve seen too many beginners buy cheap, then buy again properly later.

 3. Plants & Hardscape Choice

Premium wood and stone cost more.
Certain plants cost more.
But you don’t need the expensive ones to have a beautiful tank.

A beginner-friendly layout can be done affordably.

 4. CO₂ or No CO₂

CO₂ systems increase cost, but also increase success rate and plant choices.

Low-tech tanks are cheaper, but also slower and more limited.

 5. Professional Setup (Optional)

If you want the tank scaped for you, the cost varies based on:

  • size
  • complexity
  • type of hardscape
  • plant selection
  • design style
  • delivery + installation

These are separate from equipment cost.

Realistic Cost Breakdown (Malaysia)

Here’s a rough estimate I usually share with customers.
This is for equipment + basic materials only — not including scaping services.

🔹 45cm Low-Tech Setup

Estimated: RM400 – RM900

Includes:

  • tank
  • basic filter
  • soil
  • light
  • basic plants

Good for beginners who want to try without heavy commitment.

🔹 60cm Low-Tech or Starter CO₂ Setup

Estimated: RM1,000 – RM2,500

Includes:

  • proper light
  • proper filter (6–8× turnover)
  • soil
  • hardscape
  • easy plants
  • optional small CO₂ kit

This is the “sweet spot” for most people.

🔹 90cm Premium Setup (CO₂, Strong Light, Proper Filter)

Estimated: RM3,000 – RM7,000+

Includes:

  • larger filter
  • stronger light
  • larger hardscape
  • more plants
  • full CO₂ system
  • cabinet optional

This becomes a true display piece in your home or living room.

But Wait — Here’s the Important Part

These numbers are estimates for equipment and materials only.

👉 Professional aquascape design, layout creation, planting, and setup service are separate.
Because the work, design planning, hardscape crafting, and aftercare guidance take time and skill.

Also — prices vary depending on:

  • equipment brand
  • hardscape selection (wood/stone type)
  • plant choices
  • delivery distance
  • complexity of the design

I never promise the cheapest setup.
I focus on what works long-term and looks beautiful.

So… Is Aquascaping Expensive? My Honest View

Here’s what I’ve learned after doing this for almost 20 years:

Aquascaping is only expensive if you rush, buy wrong, or keep restarting.

When you choose the right tank size, the right equipment, and the right plants…
the hobby becomes enjoyable, stable, and very cost-effective.

The value you get back:

  • a beautiful living artwork
  • reduced stress
  • better indoor atmosphere
  • a hobby that grows with you
  • a feature piece in your home
  • something meaningful for your family

That part is priceless.
